windy art via Handmade Kids Art blog

My co-teacher found this nifty project on Handmade Kids Art blog and was so taken with it, she tried it out with her class. I was so taken with it, we did it in my class as well. The children really enjoyed it!

The first step is to imagine what the wind would look like if you could see it. The children used markers to show what their wind would look like.

Next up, the children selected a paint color and squirted it onto their tray and used their fingers to replicate what they drew on their papers.
After they used their fingers to draw the wind on their trays, they flipped their paper onto the paint, marker side down, to pull a print. We give them the vocabulary such as print pulling, etc. to let them know their art is valid. Once they pull their print, they use glue to adhere three dimensional elements of wind such as yarn and feathers.

Aren't they happy? It was very interesting to watch the children follow the steps to their own tune. The dialog that went on was a lot of fun as well. Thank you Handmade Kids Art for sharing your projects!

diy cloud necklace

We had a two week run with all things clouds. One of our projects was making cloud necklaces. The children pulled a piece of fiber fill from a larger source and then used a darning needled threaded with embroidery floss to lace it for their necklace. They were so happy and proud. Next time we do this we will use a heavier weight of thread maybe even a button or something to weigh it down. Ta-da!

the weather report

We've been studying weather at the preschool. To add a little fun, I whipped up some weather influenced pillows to add to this week's outdoor reading corner. I thought the rainbow would be the most popular but it turns out the lightening bolt was a zinger!

I used the fabric I had on hand and drew up some paper templates on large sheets of white paper I taped together. I stitched up smaller sheets of fabric to create larger sheets to fit the templates. Pieces were layered right-sides in and then stitched all the way around save for a three inch channel that allowed me to turn the whole thing right-side out and stuff. I then hand-stitched the opening shut after lightly stuffing with poly-fiberfill. The rainbow was a whole other process, I 'll post that soon. Happy weather!
